We will be moving in the next few months and I want to set up a cms for the local area we move to. If I can build something that I can earn some pocket money from, I will have achieved something. As a community based site, I have been playing with modules like classifieds, event listing, business listing and putting them in a menu system. Have you had any experience with banner ads etc?

The best I ever did from Adsense was US$100 a month while I had them on both The Border Watch and my personal site.

I took a look at your domain, makes it easier for me to answer. Google Adense is probably best for short-term cashflow. There are plugins to manage that. I also recommend the “All in One SEO” plugin to get your titles and keywords search-engine friendly.
